A New Wave Of Militarisation?

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Call it Davos, military style: When the World Economic Forum learned that U.S. President Donald Trump was coming this year, they wanted to do something special.

So 214 years ago, Forum founder Klaus Schwab called upon a Napoleonic-era Swiss marching band to give a fan-like reception before his speech.

A rare performance by the "Landwehr of Freiburg" orchestra at a gathering of academics, executives, officials and other dignitaries in Davos drew a stunned, if not hostile, reception from parts of the crowd of about 1,500. Trump's much-anticipated speech to the WEF on Friday.

The 37-member ensemble wore feathered hats and long-tailed jackets as part of their red and blue uniforms, as Trump stood calmly through a 3-1/2-minute performance of Michael Haddin's "The Koburger March." .

Landwehr president Alain Deschenaux said by phone that Schwab contacted his wife, Hilde, on Jan. 15 after the WEF founders decided they "wanted to do something unusual for President Trump."

But some weren't big fans — like Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, a Davos regular and frequent critic of Trump.

"Almost everyone coming to Davos couldn't help but notice as long as I was there," he said. "I've seen presidents, prime ministers: I've never seen a military band like we have today."

"You could see him (Trump) working hard when the band was there," Stiglitz added. "It's totally inappropriate for this setting. And so, it gives off the flavor of a kind of imperial presidency that goes down with less than one-tenth of a percent, but not with most Americans.
